CCC Auto Claims Snapshot - May 2020

Miles driven and daily traffic volume fell sharply in mid-March, as states began to issue shelter-at-home directives. At its lowest point, nationwide passenger vehicle travel was down nearly 50 percent. Not surprisingly, CCC saw a significant drop in auto claims activity. While volume in January and February 2020 was essentially flat to the same period in 2019, March volume fell sharply, leading to a nearly 10 percent decline in repairable claims in first quarter 2020 alone. Claim counts continued to fall through April, but more recently have seen modest recovery with May 2020 claim counts down 34 percent versus May 2019. With active severe convective storm activity in many parts of the U.S. throughout the month, despite less driving, claim counts were up in states such as Oklahoma and South Dakota. Nationally, repairable claim counts were down over 20 percent year-to-date through May, with states such as New York and Massachusetts down nearly 30 percent year-to-date.
